Dice

In this exercise we used vertices to draw a dice. After modelling the vertices we over-layed a texture, we drawed before in Photoshop.

The result can be seen in the applet beyond. Use UP and DOWN to zoom in or out and drag the dice to rotate with your mouse!

3D Modelling

In this exercise I imported a 3D model. I found a nice modell of a watering can on oyonale.com. To load OBJ into processing, an OBJ loader like the SAITO OBJ loader is needed.  The code is quite simple an can be seen here on my page.

You can rotate the object by dragging it with your mouse. Try it out here.

Video recorder

For this simple video recorder, I took the animation from a previous exercise (confetti) and added a record an replay function. The programm makes a mov-File of the animation. The record starts by pressing ‘R’ and stops after pressing ‘S’. After recording the file can be played/paused by pressing ‘P’.

Brightness tracking

The program two functions. Either recognize the brightest point in the webcam image or following a indivual definable color. This can easily be done by clicking somewhere inside the image. Then every pixel gets compared with the choosen color. If there’s a similarity, the pixel is going to be considered as a part of the object.

By pressing UP or DOWN the tolerance value changes. Pressing the right mouse button resets the picked color and the brightest point is overlayed (yellow circle).

Confetti

This applet generates random circles with random colors and their opacity (alpha) is determined by the vertical mouse position.

Digital pipette

This application is and does nothing more, what a conventional color picker does: It gets the exact color of the pixel on which it is clicked on. The upper right color box is the acutal clicked pixel color, the second one is the color of the previous pixel.

Color wheel

This displays all colors with their respective complementary color.

Pop-Art

The typical Andy Warhol picture effect. One color is generated randomly and the second one is the respective complementary color.

In our case, we altered digital photos and learned mor about how to manipulate pixels and techniques to overlay several images.

Image manipulation

I created several pixel manipulations with Processing.

Pixel Image

The tasks was about creating a “pixeling” effect. This can be achieved by several ways. I created a grid and took the very first point of each box. Then I filled the rest of the box with the first pixel’s color.

The pixel-resolution can be adjusted whithin the applet by pressing UP and DOWN.

Threshold

In order to get a pure black-and-white picture, you need to set a threshold. The threshold value determines, where the border between black and white is.

You can try it on your own with my applet. Press UP or DOWN to increase or decreasae the resolution and LEFT or RIGHT to change the threshold.

Overlay Images

This applet shows how to overlay two different images. The source are two pictures with the same size. You get different results by adding, subtracting or multiplying.

it is quite simple to get and display the ID3 tag of the song.

In addition I implemented the FFT (Fast Fourier Transformation) and a waveform which represent the song’s frequencies, volume etc. On the top behind the artist and the songtitle is a progressbar displayed.

Processing is an Open-Source programming language and integrated development environment built for the electronic arts and visual design communities, which aims to teach the basics of computer programming in a visual context, and to serve as the foundation for electronic sketchbooks.

The first two tasks were about drawing some lines. This was quite easy. Drawing some random lines can be realised with this simple code:

Rotating globe

The third tasks was about animation. We had to make an easy animation with serveral pictures. The result is a rotating globe with some stars around. A click changes the direction of the rotation. Through pressing ‘S’ it’s possible to take a screenshot and save it into a jpg-file.

Funnily enough, the stars won’t be displayed in the implemented version … I don’t know why ’cause it works when it is launched directly.

After some research and try-and-error I found an easy way to change the handler without getting in contact with the support unit – thanks to my studies colleague Thomas Galliker and to Google.

There are two possibilities to bypass this “problem”:

1. Change the ending of all php files to .php52.
2. Add the following lines to the corresponding .htaccess File to use the PHP 5.2 handler for all php files:

Action php /cgi-php52/php
AddHandler php52 .php

After changing the handler via .htaccess file I didn’t have any problems with my installed and activated plugins.
